Reiseführer gibt es wie Sand am Meer, und immer mehr Webseiten mit individuellen Reise-Erfahrungen und Reise-Tips. In den 80er Jahren war ich selbst einmal als Reiseveranstalter für Individualreisen tätig, leider gab es kein Internet damals, aber seit Mitte der 90er Jahre ist Jahtours online: Statt eines Vorwortes zu den Destinations bei Jahtours.com findet der geneigte Besucher hier ein Wort über Reisen in Norddeutschland - oder eine beliebige andere nicht sonderlich interessante Gegend der Welt:

Ob du reisen sollst, so fragst du, reisen in der flachen Landschaft? Die Antwort auf diese Frage ist nicht eben leicht. Und doch würde es gerade mir nicht anstehn, sie zu umgehen oder wohl gar ein nein zu sagen. So denn also ja. Aber ja unter Vorbedingungen. Laß mich Punkt für Punkt aufzählen, was ich zum wahren Reisen für unerläßlich halte:
Erstens: Wer in der Norddeutschen Tiefebene reisen will, der muß zunächst Liebe zu Land und Leuten mitbringen, mindestens keine Voreingenommenheit. Er muß den guten Willen haben, das Gute gut zu finden, anstatt es durch kritische Vergleiche plattzumachen.
Zweitens: Der Reisende in Nordeutschland muß sich ferner mit einer feineren Art von Natur- und Landschaftssinn ausgerüstet fühlen. Es gibt sensation-heischende Augen, die gleich einen Gletscher oder Meeressturm verlangen, oder zumindest das größte längste schönste. Diese mögen zu Hause bleiben. Es ist mit der flachländischen Natur wie mit manchen Frauen. Auch die häßlichste - so sagt das Sprichwort - hat immer noch sieben Schönheiten. Ganz so ist es mit dem Land zwischen Oder und Ems; wenige Orte sind so arm, daß sie nicht auch ihre sieben Schönheiten hätten. Man muß sie nur zu finden verstehn. Wer das Auge dafür hat, der wage es und reise.
Drittens: Wenn du reisen willst, mußt du die Geschichte dieses Landes kennen und lieben. Dies ist ganz unerläßlich. Wer nach Hannover kommt und einfach nur durch die menschenfeindliche Innenstadt stolpert, die mehr häßlich als gespensterhaft aufragt, wird es für ein Irrenhaus halten und entweder gleichgültig oder wohl gar in ästhetischem Mißbehagen weiterreisen; wer aber weiß: hier wurde die CeBIT erfunden; an diesem Fenster stand Guildo Horn, der sieht das unschöne Hannover mit andern Augen an. - So überall.
Wer, unvertraut mit den Großtaten unserer Geschichte, zwischen Hannover und Hamburg hinfährt, rechts die Heide, links ein paar Truppenübungsplätze, der wird sich die Schirmmütze übers Gesicht ziehn und nach BFBS im Radio suchen; wer aber weiß, hier lag das Lager Bergen-Belsen, dies ist der Freizeitpark von Soltau, oder hier wurde Kampfstoff aus dem ersten Weltkrieg entsorgt, der wird sich aufrichten im Wagen und die Heide plötzlich wie in wunderbarer Beleuchtung sehn.
Viertens: Du mußt nicht allzusehr durch den Komfort der großen Touren verwöhnt und verweichlicht sein. Es wird einem selten das Schlimmste zugemutet, aber es kommt doch vor, und keine Lokalkenntnis, keine Reiseerfahrung reichen aus, dich im voraus wissen zu lassen, wo es vorkommen wird und wo nicht. Zustände von Armut und Verwahrlosung schieben sich in die Zustände modernen Kulturlebens ein, und während du eben noch im bergigen Lande das beste Lager fandest, findest du vielleicht im Schenkenländchen eine Lagerstätte, die alle Mängel und Schrecknisse, deren Bett und Linnen überhaupt fähig sind, in sich vereinigt. Regeln sind nicht zu geben, Sicherheitsmaßregeln nicht zu treffen. Wo es gut sein könnte, da triffst du es vielleicht schlecht, und wo du das Kümmerlichste erwartest, überraschen dich Luxus und Behaglichkeit.
Fünftens und letztens. Wenn du das Wegstück wagen willst füll deinen Beutel mit Geld. Reisen in Norddeutschland ist alles andre eher als billig. Glaube nicht, weil du die Preise kennst, die Sprache sprichst und sicher bist vor Kellner und Radarkontrollen, daß du sparen kannst; glaube vor allem nicht daß du es deshalb kannst, weil ja alles so nahe liegt. Die Nähe tut es nicht. In vielen bereisten Ländern kann man billig reisen, wenn man anspruchslos ist; hier kannst du es nicht, wenn du nicht das Glück hast zu den Dauerläufern oder Langstrecken-Radfahrern zu gehören. Ist dies nicht der Fall, ist dir der Wagen ein unabweisliches Wanderungsbedürfnis, so gib es auf, für ein Billiges deine norddeutsche Tour machen zu wollen. Eisenbahnen, wenn du ins Land willst, sind in den wenigsten Fällen nutzbar; also bleibt .. das Taxi, oder, weil doch die Landschaft ausgesprochen flach ist, ab und zu ein geliehenes Fahrrad. Taxi ist teuer. Man merkt dir bald an, daß du fort willst oder wohl gar fort mußt, und die norddeutsche Art ist nicht so alles Kaufmännischen bar und bloß, daß sie daraus nicht Vorteil ziehen sollte. Wohlan denn, es kann dir passieren, daß du, um von Soltau nach Munster oder von Buckow nach Werneuchen zu kommen, mehr zahlen mußt als für einen Flug nach Berlin hin und zurück. Nimmst du Anstoß an solchen Preisen und Ärgernissen - so bleibe zu Haus.
Hast du nun aber alle diese Punkte reiflich erwogen, hast du, wie die Engländer sagen, deine Seele fertig gemacht und bist du zu dem Resultate gekommen: Ich kann es wagen, nun denn, so wag es getrost, und du wirst es nicht bereuen. Eigentümliche Freuden und Genüsse werden dich begleiten. Du wirst Entdeckungen machen, denn überall, wohin du kommst, wirst du, vom Touristenstandpunkt aus, eintreten wie in jungfräuliches Land.
Du wirst Klosterruinen begegnen, von deren Existenz höchstens die nächste Stadt eine leise Kenntnis hatte; du wirst inmitten alter Dorfkirchen, deren zerbröckelter Schindelturm nur auf Elend deutete, große Wandbilder oder in den treppenlosen Grüften reiche Kupfersärge mit Kruzifix und vergoldeten Wappenschildern finden; du wirst Schlachtfelder überschreiten, Mülldeponien und Hünengräber, von denen die Menschen nichts mehr wissen, und statt der Wikipedia-Einträge und Allerweltsgeschichten werden Sagen und Legenden und hier und da selbst die Bruchstücke verklungener Lieder zu dir sprechen. Das Beste aber, dem du begegnen wirst, das werden die Menschen sein, vorausgesetzt, daß du dich darauf verstehst, das rechte Wort für den gemeinen Mann zu finden.
Verschmähe nicht dein Zelt neben dem Bauerngehöft aufzurichten, laß dir erzählen vom Landwirt, von seinem Hof und seinem Dorf, von seiner Soldaten- oder seiner Wanderzeit, und sein Geplauder wird dich mit dem Zauber des Natürlichen und Lebendigen umspannnen. Du wirst, wenn du heimkehrst, nichts Auswendiggelerntes gehört haben wie auf geführten Touren, wo alles seinen Preis hat; der Mensch selber aber wird sich vor dir erschlossen haben. Und das bleibt doch immer das Beste.

Hawaii
Years visited: 1993-2000 - Aloha is not only a tourist attraction on the islands. Daily life has much of the efficiency but nothing of the hassle of western style living. While Oahu is dominated by East asians living the american dream, the outer islands of Kauai and Hawaii sport the more typical island feeling of lush vegetation, volcanoes, coral reefs and most friendly locals.

California
Years visited: 1987-2000 - Again and again America invented itself here, starting with the gold rush, then the fruit and vegetable farming, later electronics and computer science industries now media centre of the world it is always worth a visit, magnifient scenery all over, good surfing along its shores.

Cape Cod
Years visited: 1998-2003 - When in Boston spend the weekend on the Cape. We spent hours in traffic on Route 3 waiting to pass the bridges to get to the Cape. Wide sandy beaches on the eastern Ocean shore, nice bathing places on its south shore, mild climat in winter not too hot in the summer, many good places to spend the weekend. Just beware the traffic!

New England
Years visited: 1998-2003 - The main season around Boston starts in September, best time is October and when the sky is blue the colors are breathtaking. Only time for Boston? Try Mount Auburn Cemetary in Cambridge with its collection of botanical rareties and wide selection of colorful trees.

Florida
Years visited: 1988-2005 - Summer paradise even when it's winter in the north, from Key West to Daytona Beach and Tampa Bay there is sun and warm bathing in the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Many spring break destinations and average age far over 60 years in many places. East coast has nice surfing around Cape Canaveral at Cocoa Beach and New Smyrna.

Long Island
Years visited: 1998-2000 - It is one LONG island. Starting with Brooklyn and Queens in New York city it gets very rural at the Hamptons. Most amazing shores with clothing optional beaches and nice surfing in Hurrican Season.

French Atlantic
Years visited: 1980-2016 - 100 miles of wide sandy beaches with dunes and fir-forrests behind in the southwest, shallow swamps in the middle and tiny bays of Brittany in the north the French west coast is best beach for many Europeans.

French Riviera
Years visited: 1979-2014 - classic winter resort coast now summer grill for Northerners fed up with foggy rainy cold weather they come here to find best climate in central continental Europe.

Italian Riviera
Years visited: 1979-2014 - classic winter resort coast now summer grill for Northerners fed up with foggy rainy cold weather they come here to find best climate in central continental Europe.

Tenerife Canary Islands
Years visited: 2002-2017 - When in Europe this is closest one could get in comparision to the Hawaiian islands. Volcanoes like on Maui or Big Island, there are lot of deserts on these islands but very few spots of lush tropical vegetation. The south is dominated by tourism while the north receives quite some waves during winter.

Gran Canary Island
Years visited: 2004-2012 - European outpost in the eastern Atlantic, these islands attract mainly norther european visitors in quest of wide beaches, warm waters and friendly weather.

Cities

New York City, NY
Years visited: 1998-2003 - The city that never sleeps gets you a stiff neck when visiting the first time. After a few visits you do not bother looking up the buildings all the time any more, but still get puzzled when looking up broadway from Union Square or walking Brooklyn Bridge or taking the ferry to Staten Island. Apart the obvious tourist attractions we visited lower East Side, midtown shopping with the locals, Battery Park on the Hudson and left the car not far from where Studio 54 got the crowds in the late 70s.

Boston, MA
Years visited: 1993-2003 - The Big Dig city changed a lot during the last 10 years, and the non-rectilinear mesh of olde english style country roads made us loose our way every time we went downtown or to Cambridge. We lived a couple years on the South Shore and in Summer there are nice beaches, in winter the snowy hills of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine made for weekend trips and good quality of life.

Honolulu, HI - Waikiki
Years visited: 1993-2000 - Nothing beats the Aloha Spirit on the islands. While Waikiki is a high-rise city with small beach for tourists, Honolulu is part american suburbia part charming outpost in the Pacific Ocean. The mix of international ancestry makes this one of the most friendly towns I ever visited.

Las Vegas, NV
Years visited: 1987,1993,2000 - Disneyland for Adults! Over the years there have been famous hotels and casinos bulldozed for huge high-tech theme hotels and exhibition grounds. While in the 80s still the casino gambling prevailed now there is a lot of non-gambling tourism and conference and trade show business dominating the southern part of this late century boom-town.

Biarritz, France
Years visited: 1981-2016 - Tiny town became surfing mekka of Europe 50 years ago and attracted young people to a place famous for pensioners and winter vacation to avoid harsh northern climates. Close to the Pyrenees mountains it often catches more than a cloud of rain and has most green hills in the backcountry. The local language is basque neither french nor spanish of more celtic ancestry. Surfing is best in fall and winter so bring a wetsuit and a longboard for the Cote Basque and Grand Plage.

Menton, Riviera
Years visited: 1979-2014 - This is where we fell in love with the Riviera. Small and quiet town on the border to Italy, this is the least french town on the coast. Since 1996 there even is an artificial reef so there is possibility to surf when the waves are up. When waiting for waves, there is plenty of magnificient back-country hiking or excursions to neighboring Monaco Monte Carlo.

Monaco - Monte Carlo
Years visited: 1979-2014 - A state of its own but merely larger than a napkin sandwiched between the Mountains and the Mediterranean it has a dynamic of its own being tax-heaven for the rich and sort of Las Vegas for the tourists. We spend days and weeks even nights on the beaches over the years it became a familiar place and there is always building activity that changes the look of this tiny skyscraper town.

Nice - Nizza
Years visited: 1979-2014 - The main town on the french Riviera has seen more glorious in the past and seems to lag behind in many aspects of modern french town designs but has its special aura on the Promenade des Anglais, stretching from the airport to the old town. Now the Promenade gets a bikepath and there is also a tramway running into the valley up the Paillon. West of Nice you can get a little California feeling when working in Sohia Antipolis, sort of local Silicon Valley.

Paris, France
Years visited: 1979-2015 - This is the city where it happens on the European continent. Rich in history, monuments and people from all corners of the world only Paris boosts your feeling when strolling through the streets of its 20 different arrondissments. Paris steadily reinvents itself and is the cultural economic and technological center of France. Since summer 2007 you can ride rental bicycle Velib for fast transit in town.

Berlin
Years visited: 1967-2016 - Once a pair to Paris and London, completely destroyed in 2nd world war, separated in two, rebuilt, reunited and here we are in Europe's biggest urban sprawl. Two rivers Spree and Havel make for open spaces in the city and alternatives to car traffic. Many lakes surround Berlin, from Köpenik to Wannsee the S-Bahn unites the two parts which even almost 20 years after reunification sport notable differences not only in architecture but also in in the language of the locals. Some parts of Berlin-Mitte became home to international trend-setters with concept shops, nicely decorated bars, and ever rising rent - only little difference to the corresponding streets in Paris or New York.

Baden-Baden
Years visited: 1980-2017 - Tiny town in Germany's southwest just between Black Forrest and Rhine Valley it has a history with the nobles and rich of the world. Walk in the nice parks and enjoy the mild climate of the Southwest, it also is linked to Pearl of the Riviera, Menton.

Munich - München
Years visited: 1971-2017 - Once a charming town on the bavarian plains the hightech boom of the late 20th century made it the most dynamic (and expensive) city in Central Europe. Olympic games in 1972 arranged for good infrastructure, Munich became the first town in post-war Germany with fast transit, and pedestrian inner city. Now München ist 2nd airport in Germany and gateway to Europe's Southeast.

St Petersburg - Leningrad
Years visited: 1999-2016 - On the occasion of its 300 years of existence, the muddy town on the eastern Gulf of Finland has prepped up its inner city for the many expected tourists. Security is still a problem, small crime and mafia like banditism leave you with that mixed feeling of anger and enjoyment. Best time to visit is between May and September, go see the many huge parks and castles in the southern outskirts.
